The southernmost street in the neighborhood surrounding the Grieving Burrick Inn—more of a looping alleyway—joining with the south end of Benvolio St., running south, then turning to the west, to a gate with a portcullis.

A murdering scoundrel responsible for the deaths of at least two persons connected with the Grieving Burrick Inn. He killed his own father and dumped his body into the sewers. His true love interest was a woman named Juliette, though he planned to marry Sophia, owner of Sophia’s Inn, and have her killed immediately and seemingly by accident, and then take all her money. In the end, that cobrabeast^† killed her before Alexander’s last attempt to wed her. His plans ruined, and shunned by Juliette, Alex went off into the woods to go hunting, and was killed by a crayman^†.

A small suite in the Ivory Rose with a view out into the main courtyard. The room was reportedly once occupied by the legendary hero, Fijjin-Arro. Lady Antonette was offered the Ambassador's Suite during the bidding war with Lord Raputo over the purchase of the business. She declined the room, and did not wish to stay the night, prompting some among the staff to suspect that she did not expect to win the bidding war.

A scribe of the old tongue, this secretive sage came under Master Nightfall's employ around the same time as Dante. His ability to look at the surface of any situation and quickly ascertain all meaning has made him a valuable addition to the intelligence division. He was invaluable in plotting every detail of the MCs' Mission X operation. His identity and location are closely guarded secrets, known only to Nightfall and a trusted few. He recounted his moment of transition to a servant of The Circle in a letter to Dante.

A bartender in the Ivory Rose's Pine Lounge who was off-duty by the time Mission X began. Count Benedikt had taken an interest in her, leaving her his key and inviting her to visit him in the Duke's Suite, where he was staying.

A warden and noblewoman, ally of The Circle, Master Nightfall’s liaison to Agent Rubber, who is in her employ. She controls a small territory within the Downtowne district, near Three Gates Bridge. Her part in Mission X was to keep Raputo distracted, busy in negotiations over the sale of the Ivory Rose while the MCs fulfilled their part of the mission.

A society founded by Master Nightfall before he became a warden, seemingly a loose contingent of smaller factions, including the Material Component agents, each tied tenuously through the ranks to a central seat of power. The organization takes its name from an ancient building in southern Hightowne, the occupancy of which had remained taboo until claimed by Nightfall. It was converted into a library-museum of a sort, as a front, with the criminal enterprises taking place behind the scenes. Few within know all of the faces that The Circle fronts, but most understand that this is to become appealing to as many allies as possible while being respectable to as many enemies as manageable, while hiding away the more undesirable elements; thus, simultaneous alliances with conflicting groups becomes possible. It is by these tactics that Nightfall and his Circle grew in power over such a short time, though some suspect that much was already in place long before the leader ever set foot on The City's shores.

One of two guards who patrolled Stormcloud's Clubhouse when it was not being used, he had been known to repeatedly lock the other staff-people out of the area and engage in tomfoolery with Delled, his partner, and Petunia, the bartender, as accomplices.

Father of Mister Cloud, son of Stormcloud the Pirate, and owner of the Ivory Rose Casino during his time. Cloud II ended his father's cheating practices and brought the business back into good repute as an honest gambling establishment, though in the process he found it necessary to open the casino to the middle classes. He proposed an expansion to the Ivory Rose by adding a large hotel area, more than doubling the size of the building. This plan was eventually carried out by his son, Cloud III, otherwise known simply as Mister Cloud.

At the time of Mission X, he was the owner of the Ivory Rose Hotel and Casino, which he had inherited from his father. Though he is considered a sharp and effective businessman, in truth he tends to act as a mere figurehead, leaving all operations of the building in the hands of the upper staff. His greatest contribution to the business was the completion of his father's dream to see the Ivory Rose expanded to include a luxury hotel, which was finished twenty years prior to the events of Mission X. However, in breaking with tradition, he had claimed the Executive Suite as his own personal apartment, a room which was meant to be utilized by whoever served as overnight management. It was rumored that this was due to unfavorable conditions at his home with his wife, and to convenience his ongoing affair with a secret mistress. At the time, he had no heir of his own, and had expressed a disinterest in wealth and running a business in favor of more simple pleasures.

A bold and somewhat naïve character, Dante did not grow up on the streets, but rather was cast down from a life of luxury to the pits of the gutter. He sought employment and protection under Master Nightfall out of desperation.

An infamous and munificent nobleman who reportedly once stayed in the room, later called the Duke’s Suite in his honor, after gambling and drinking all night and giving all his winnings to the waitress who brought him his wine.

The smallest suite the Ivory Rose has to offer, and the only one that does not feature a bathroom. It features generous views of the river to the west and north. It was reportedly once stayed in by the infamous Duke Bree Scott Dublinshire.

The chief custodian of the fourth floor office area in the Ivory Rose Hotel and Casino. The broom closet there bears a golden plaque with his name and title on it, similar to those on the doors of all other offices and executives. It is unclear of this is fondly intended or meant as a mockery, though it does appear he does his job very well.

A successful entrepreneur with an empire of bars throughout The City, and his success may be due to unethical activity—such as addicting people to his special shakes—and connections with powerful persons, more than legitimate business practices. He had acquired the Grieving Burrick Inn not too long before Dante was sent on a mission there.

An enigmatic artist who has faded in and out of obscurity over the years, appearing when he has a role to fill and vanishing just as quickly thereafter. Due to his presence during the original construction of the Ivory Rose Hotel and Casino, a time which predates The Circle by many decades, planning of the mission was able to proceed without lengthy and dangerous reconnaissance missions.

A small lodging establishment located near the northern edge of The City, far from Hightowne. Dante’s first mission for The Circle took place there, and his accomplishment was his initiation into The Circle, under Master Nightfall’s wings. The name refers to the grief over the death of the Inn’s previous owner, Sophia. Before she was killed by a cobrabeast^†, the name of the establishment was “Sophia’s Inn.”

A union of legal experts who hear cases, give advice, and seek and administer justice in the City’s courts.

The last living man who was educated at a long forgotten academy of science, he alone managed to use their discoveries to defeat both time and death. A unique sort of mad scientist, he is able to disassemble and stitch together pieces of technology as if they were but cloth. He is completely loyal to The Circle for reasons almost unknown, and totally dedicated to Nightfall’s cause. He is an associate of Captain Fang, and while using Room I of the Grieving Burrick Inn as a workshop, an experiment of his ended in an explosion that blew a hole through the floor. The falling beams gave Pomok a cranial injury while he was in the basement fiddling with the Inn’s power generator.

An industrious City faction of religious fanatics who worship a deity called The Builder and his holy symbol, the Hammer, by which he taught man to build homes and cities from rock and trees. Much of The City was built and is maintained by the Hammerites. Pomok frequently wants to have them come and repair their failing electronic devices.

A fraternity of mages who arrived at The City from the east, they are elementalist conjurers who study and learn to control the four elements of Air, Earth, Fire, and Water using only mental discipline and will. The name refers to their use of hand gestures to focus thought and elemental energy, although nearly all spell casters in this virtual world use their hands this way.

A district of The City situated to the north and west, ward of Master Nightfall, and the location of the Circle of Stone and Shadow.

Mentioned by Captain Fang as a joking reference to the fictional Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant…most likely.

A "majestic gallery" through which all guests to the Ivory Rose must pass. It serves no function other than to impress visitors with the opulant grandure of the building. The Monarch Suite surrounds and overlooks the Ivory Hall at the third floor, as does the Executive Suite on the fourth. The seventy foot tall dome of the Ivory Hall can be seen from the south courtyard.

Alexander’s true love interest. He wrote in his journal about her frequently. In his writings she seemed to be in on his con game, yet never seemed to offer much input, only annoyance when things went wrong, then abandonment when his scheme failed utterly, which all makes her sound just as rotten and greedy as he, except she left all the dirty work to him. Her signed and framed picture rests on his makeshift nightstand in the attic.

A man who, evidently, comes to the conclusion that Jenny is not a woman worth killing himself over.

The megalomaniacal genius and charismatic leader of the aggressive and technologically inventive Mechanists.

A nickname for Dante during his days with the small group of rough but honest criminals prior to his time with The Circle. It was possibly gained because of his aloof, stuffy nature, and because the name Keith sounded to them like, "someone's snobby uncle who wears spats."

Dante's other nickname among the same group of criminals, possibly poking fun at the way Dante would sometimes try to seem tough and gritty, but only came off as "Keith's tawdry twin brother."

A nobleman and owner of LeBlanc Mining Limited, he’s also a member of the Newmarket Scepter Owner’s Association, and was boarded in Room VI of the Grieving Burrick Inn during their convention. He has connections with the Mechanists, which was seen as a potential problem for The Circle.

A division of The Circle. It is a versatile team of secret agents under the direct command of Master Nightfall. Their name is derived from the idea that each agent is unique a piece of a larger whole, each with their own specialization, and must be used together for maximum benefit. However, these agents still from time to time work alone. Each is given a code-name inspired by a "type" of material.

An aggressive and progressive religious sect under the leadership of Karras, splintered off from the Hammerites, replacing the Hammer with the Boiler and Gear as the holy symbols of their worship of The Builder. They are changing the face of The City, constructing buildings without wood, and introducing both new and forgotten technologies. Pomok has applied for membership within the Order several times, but has always been ignored.

An island kingdom, the king and queen of which were assassinated during their visit to The City, ending the brief allegiance they once held.

A social group of nobility, business people, and other persons of power, who each possess a scepter. There were six members in total during the time when they gathered at the Grieving Burrick Inn, and it is unknown what changes in membership may have come about since then. It is also unknown what their meetings entail, nor what this kind of gathering means to the members, individually, or collectively, but egotism is a likely theme.

This crime lord has only been a citizen of The City for several years. In just that short time, he has risen to considerable power and placed himself among the wardens, a loose union of aristocrats who govern The City's underworld. An organizer of gathered intelligence and a fact-checker of information for The Circle’s agents, she is Master Nightfall's personal assistant, who replaced Sheam in that role when Sheam became the captain of the MCs. With an operation of such importance, her skills were greatly needed. Organization, an acute attention to detail, and an obsession with thoroughness ensures that nothing will be overlooked that could endanger the MCs' plan. Her wild and reckless past has been put behind her, but is still very evident in her sly demeanor.

The one gambling hall open for business the night of the events of Mission X. Bueller got himself drunk and passed out behind the bar, there.

A nobleman and representative of the City Council, he’s also a member of the Newmarket Scepter Owner’s Association, boarded in Room VII of the Grieving Burrick Inn during their convention. He poses a threat to Master Nightfall, with whom he has a vendetta against. He has plans to persuade his fellow Council members to create a tax to drain wealth from Nightfall and redistribute it to himself and his friends. He is more revolted by (“disguised by” [sic]) the stench of burricks than most, and possibly allergic.

A bartender employed by the Ivory Rose Hotel and Casino who worked in Stormcloud's Clubhouse around the time of the events of Mission X. She had been known to join in with the tomfoolery of the two guards, Clarence and Delled, claiming they made her do it.

An employee of the Ivory Rose, head of Human Resources, in charge of the payroll.

Located near or within the Sweegy Woods, it is a place of beauty where Mister Cloud wishes to take his mistress once they’ve wed.

A guard who has a fascination with machinery—power generators, in particular—he has applied for a job with a local power plant, and applied with the Mechanists on more than one occasion. He suffered a cranial injury while employed at the Grieving Burrick Inn, after an explosion caused by Hallming brought wooden beams down on his head. He has a taste for alcohol, which his injury had exacerbated. He eventually got a job at the Ivory Rose Hotel and Casino, assuming the position of Engineering Inspector, after being ignored repeatedly by the Mechanist Order. He has not given up trying to gain membership with them.

A new ally of The Circle who quickly proved his invaluable worth, he is an influential businessman in his own right, and has a secret vendetta against Lord Raputo which has forced him into collusion with The Circle. The intelligence and resources he provided concerning the details of Lord Raputo's plans filled in critical missing information.

A powerful warden and enemy of Master Nightfall, he made a move to take possession of the Three Gates Bridge district, which Master Nightfall and his allies could not allow—the crux of Mission X. He was a guest of the Ivory Rose that night, rooming in the Monarch’s Suite along with his bodyguards, but kept occupied in a bidding war with Lady Antonette over the purchase of the Ivory Rose, which was the key to controlling Three Gates Bridge.

Just as the name implies, a blacksmith’s workshop owned by Skarz. The shop is located not far north from the northwest corner of the Grieving Burrick Inn.

A swashbuckling bard who has enough scars to indicate that his ability to make enemies is only matched by his ability to survive them. He is maybe operating at some other level than the rest of us, maybe not quite sane, but all of this only feeds his ego. He'd be a megalomaniac if he had the ambition to rule over others. Instead, he wishes only to entertain them - which is almost as dangerous.

The earliest known owner of the Sophia’s Inn before she was killed by her fiancé, Alexander Von Leo, and the name was changed to the “Grieving Burrick.” She had willed her Inn to an unnamed individual, who eventually sold it to Captain Fang for 100 gold.

The previous name of the Grieving Burrick Inn, before its namesake, Sophia, was killed. She willed the Inn to an unnamed person, who owned it only briefly. This unnamed owner gave all the guards raises, and paid a great deal of money on Theft Insurance after a robbery, in spite of weak patronage, causing the business to nearly collapse before selling it to Captain Fang for a pathetic 100 gold.

A thick beverage, concocted by Captain Fang, containing a special powder that is extremely potent and highly addictive.

Once a simple thuggish hireling, but whose cleverness and judgment befitted more refined work, Steel is boastful, presumptuous, and rarely fails. His appointment to the Material Components is a recent one, and strictly a trial. He will be doing his best to prove that his new position is a good fit.

An infamous pirate who founded the Ivory Rose sixty years prior to the events of Mission X. Under his ownership, the casino was notorious for its crooked wheels and deceitful dealers, and soon fell out of favor, nearly going bankrupt.

A luxurious but cozy spot in the Ivory Rose, which must be rented in advance and is not open to general guests. It features a bar, poker tables, blackjack tables, gambling machines, a small theater for musical performances, a library/den, and its own private office area. It, along with the Oak Theater and Mahogany Hall, was one of the areas added to the Ivory Rose during the addition of the hotel. In naming it after the business's infamous founder, the casino was able to turn stories of crime and barbarism into ideas of romantic adventure, thus turning the sordid past into an asset.

A nobleman and guest of the Ivory Rose. He’s a real party animal who stayed in Room 210--when he wasn’t drunk in the hallways and harassing the females.

A front-desk clerk at the Ivory Rose charged with bringing money down to the vault and keeping the general ledgers up to date. He has expressed concern that the general ledger and the head accountant's ledgers are kept separate.

A bogus insurance policy to aid businesses in the event of a robbery, with questionable conditional requirements. The person who owned the Grieving Burrick Inn prior to Captain Fang had purchased the most expensive insurance offered shortly after the Inn was robbed. An increase in employees’ pay, a lack of customers, the theft, and the purchase of theft insurance all led to the owner being forced to sell the Inn.

A corrupted spelling of “Trickster,” a name of the Pagan faction’s god. It was used by Alexander in a derogatory manner to indicate the deceptive and illicit behavior he felt Sophia’s father suspected he was engaged in.

A member of the Hand Brotherhood—a Fire Mage—and also a member of the Newmarket Scepter Owner’s Association, he is boarded in Room II of the Grieving Burrick Inn during their convention. Considering the nature of the Hand Brotherhood, his membership in the NSOA and boarding in that Inn is extremely unusual—and stranger still after he had a vision as he slept that he would be visited by a thief who would attempt to steal his fire wand.

She has scammed many by taking commissions to sculpt what she calls “soft crystal”, which is ice, but her clients are unaware of this and are led to believe it is a more persistent, though fragile, material.

Her brilliance and ingenuity were second only to Hallming himself, and her experience with the work of the agents augmented Hallming's own rather focused knowledge base. Each of the MCs' unique masks used in Mission X was handcrafted by her from Hallming's initial prototype.
